Ring Main Unit & Sectionalizer Maintenance
Ring Main Units and Sectionalizers
Power Distribution System
Distribution is the critical portion of a Power system that has a direct interface with consumers
It is essential that a distribution system be maintained with a high reliability index
It has commercial implications too
Distribution automation is one of the channels to achieve higher reliability
Utilities have started paying attention on automation of distribution systems
Typical Radial Feeder system
Typically distribution systems are with RADIAL feeders emanating from the Substation bus
Feeders contain branches to cover a geographical area
And their protection is again at the SS end
They suffer the disadvantage of tripping at SS end for any fault downstream
Large number of consumers are affected thus in the event of a tripping
Towards better reliability and automation, ring feeders are formed with RMUs
Sectionalizers are installed in radial branches
Only the faulty portion is isolated here
Number of consumers affected in case of a fault, will be very minimum
Fault indicators with directional properties are installed
Fault path will be exhibited by the Fault indicators for an easy location
Typical arrangement
Ring Main Units and Sectionalizers
Ring Distribution System – Normal Condition
Ring Distribution System – Faulty Condition
Ring Distribution System – Restored Condition
Being installed in a Distribution system for an improved reliability factor, RMUs and Sectionalizers do the following functions
Helping the distribution Engineer to keep all the healthy portions of the system, in service
Indicating the fault path in case of a fault for early rectification
Recording a complete load data and sending to control center which helps ‘load forecast’
The Distribution Transformers can be provided with a graded Protection instead of Fuses, for better security
And thus it becomes essential to maintain these equipment like any other power system component and ensure their sustained service
